Prostate examination is also commonly known as the digital rectal examination (DRE). It is the simplest procedure to analyze prostate disorder. It is also the examination of the rectum. The physician tends to check and analyze the prostate to detect cancer that may be present in it. Most patients are horrified by the imagination of a prostate examination. This is because they are under a notion that one requires a lot of preparation prior to this examination and above all, the common belief that a digital rectum examination is extremely painful. However, the truth is that a patient does not require any sort of preparation on the side prior to this examination. The entire procedure just takes about 5 minutes for a physician to accomplish. The prostate examination can be made easy by concentrating on something else and taking deep breaths. The examination is not painful, however you may experience slight discomfort during the procedure. The discomfort can be avoided by taking above-mentioned steps n to consideration. Prostate examination procedure: a) The man is instructed to stand with his feet apart, facing the examination couch. b) He is supposed to bend forward so that his arms or elbows are on the couch. c) Now the doctor would put on a surgical glove and cover a finger in lubricant. d) The lubricated finger would be inserted in a down wards angle as if pointing towards the umbilicus or the belly buttons. e) A few seconds may pass by as doctor waits for the external sphincter muscle to relax. f) The man may be exactly aware of some movement of the finger before it is removed. g) The doctor may also inform you that he is about to remove the finger and the offer you some tissue to wipe the lubricant from the anus and buttocks. During the examination the doctor tries to identify the lobes and groove of the prostate gland. A normal sized prostate gland would be around 2-4cm long and triangular in shape. They would also expect the prostate to feel firm and rubbery. There is nothing to be terrified about the prostate examination as the procedure is simple and would facilitate identifying a disorder at an early stage, in order to be treated effectively.
