Corsica is a well known place where many people love to snorkel. On almost any beach you visit, you will find people with snorkeling equipment. The seas are rougher around this lovely island than in other areas, but the beaches are wide and flat. Snorkeling in Corsica is better accomplished by using a boat to get the prime locations for snorkeling. A few beaches have road access, but facilities at the beaches tend to be limited. PORTIGLIOLO Portigliolo lies on the western shore of the island of Corsica, about midway between Propriano and Belvedere. Portigliolo is not even a village, just a restaurant and two campgrounds, but it has a wonderful snorkeling spot just off the restaurant parking lot. A few feet from shore are large rocks, some partially submerged in the surf. A great deal of enjoyment can be gained during the snorkeling trip to and from the rocks. TIZZANO This isolated village has two bays, the first of the two is located behind the usual beachfront restaurant and down a small footpath. The bay is well worth visiting. It has some protection from the west wind and the water is very clear, making for good viewing of the attendant sea life. Slabs of rock below the surface of the water are not overgrown, thus offering food for the sea creatures with some hiding places. By looking closely, almost nose to nose with the rocks, you will be able to view small crustaceans as well as the small blenny which features a sharp dorsal fin and prefers to hide in the small caves. Further from shore, you will be able to snorkel through a field of sea grass which offers marvelous opportunities for viewing a large number and variety of sea creatures. Because of its isolation, the bay is not heavily used, which can make for a tremendous advantage if you hate having to bump into other snorkelers, but it is also rather difficult to reach with a somewhat long and arduous motor trip. Although Corsica does have an entirely different character than the tropical islands of the Caribbean, its location south of France in the Mediterranean Sea gives one a unique and enjoyable type of snorkeling.

The woman also should make sure she knows the techniques of clearing and defogging her face mask. The woman snorkeling does not need to know how to swim, indeed many snorkelers are non-swimmers, but learning a couple basic kicks will help to move her through the water easily, and make the sport of snorkeling less physically demanding. Safety practices cannot be overemphasized. No person should snorkel alone. There are too many situations where something can happen quickly and help will be needed. Even if swimming with a buddy, the practice of one person on the surface while the other is below is a good practice. Snorkeling is a very safe sport, and safety statements are not meant to frighten, but just a matter of good practices when entering a new environment which is not the natural element of man.
